SENIOR RESEARCH ANALYST, HEFREN-TILLOTSON
WHAT'S TOP OF YOUR TO-DO LIST RIGHT NOW?
One of my responsibilities is to oversee our firm’s sustainable investment strategies, while also heading the manager research and client communications. I am currently working on our quarterly impact report, which highlights the engagement work conducted by the funds we use. It is fascinating to learn about the process of influencing and improving corporate behavior and sharing that with clients. It is also useful for evaluating the quality of the engagement efforts at different funds.
WHAT'S KEEPING YOU AWAKE AT NIGHT (WORK WISE)?
Making sure our clients meet their long-term financial goals is key to our team’s work, so whatever could interfere with that is always top of mind.
BEST MEETING YOU'VE EVER HAD?
I have been fortunate enough to meet with many talented, intelligent portfolio managers over the years. Having Dan Fuss from Loomis Sayles visit our office was a real honor. It was great to be able to learn from one of the most respected bond investors of all time. He shared insights into his analysis process and helped us understand what has driven his remarkable career.
WORST MEETING YOU'VE EVER HAD?
We once had a portfolio manager who excitedly told us about the enormous growth rates he expected for the companies in his fund. The numbers seemed extremely high. After the meeting, we checked the math. If the PM was correct, after a few years his small group of companies would have had more revenue than the entire S&P 500. We passed on the fund.
IF YOU WEREN'T DOING THIS JOB, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?
I love to travel and write, so I would combine them and be a travel writer.
WHAT ARE YOUR INTERESTS OUTSIDE OF WORK?
Hefren-Tillotson is known in Pittsburgh for its involvement in the community, and I enjoy the chance to do local volunteer work. I serve on a school board as well as a nonprofit newspaper.
IF YOU COULD TRAVEL ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD IT BE?
I hear New Zealand is wonderful.
IF WE GAVE YOU $100,000, HOW WOULD YOU INVEST IT?
I would invest the money in our firm’s impact portfolios. The quality of those funds with sustainable investment mandates has improved drastically over the past decade. Both the investment teams and the engagement staff on the funds we use are very impressive. I like how they offer the opportunity to grow your money while creating positive change in the world.
DO YOU HAVE ANY HIDDEN TALENTS?
I have an MFA in creative writing, so I’m always looking for new ways to make financial writing more entertaining and interesting for clients.
